NAADAC

The Association of Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) is a membership organization serving addiction counselors, educators and other addiction-focused health care professionals who specialize in addiction prevention, treatment and education. One of its central objectives as an organization is to solidify the addiction professionals' place in the public health continuum. NAADAC seeks various ways to further integrate with the public health community and in developing pathways for the education, recruitment, retention, clinical training, and advancement of professionals who specialize in addictive disorders.36

Calls to Action

Several prominent reports and plans have focused attention to workforce issues and have served as “Calls to Action”:

• Achieving the Promise: Transforming Mental Health Care in America from the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health.37
  
  
• An Action Plan for Behavioral Health Workforce Development prepared by the Annapolis Coalition.38
  
  
• Current Challenges Facing the Addiction Treatment Workforce presented by SAMHSA’s Partners for Recovery.39
  
  
• Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century and Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions: Quality Chasm Series by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). These reports make an urgent call for fundamental change to close the quality gap, recommend a redesign of the American health care system, and provide overarching principles for specific direction for policymakers, health care leaders, clinicians, regulators, purchasers, and others.40
  
  
• Report to Congress: Addictions Treatment Workforce Development, presented by SAMHSA, summarizes current and emerging issues confronting the treatment workforce. The report also provides recommendations developed by stakeholders and Federal partners.41
